A year ago in July, my husband’s grandmother was killed in a car accident. It was a sudden shock to the whole family, and we miss her dearly. This year we all got a text (a couple of days before the day she passed) from my mother in-law saying, “Let’s make July 28th a Random Acts of Kindness Day.” We thought what a wonderful was to remember grandma by. She was always so kind to those around her. She loved helping out anyone in need.
We decided as a family we would deliver cookies with a cute note on them. We delivered them to neighbors that we don’t normally take cookies to. It was fun to see the happy faces of those we delivered cookies to when we surprised them with a yummy treat. The kids really loved sharing their cookies with those people in our neighborhood. My 3 year old said, “Mom that was so fun. Let’s do it again some other day.”
I feel like it is important to teach our children to love those around us. Including our neighbors and people we don’t interact with on a daily basis. This was a great activity to do in remembrance of our grandma. This could also be a great activity to do as a family more often. It shows your children that we need to strive to be kind and loving to everyone.
Coc-Oat-Chip Cookie Recipe
1 3/4 cups of all purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp of salt
1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar
1 cup butter softened
1/2 cup of granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 Tbsp milk
2 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups of old fashioned oats
2 cups of Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
1 cup of chopped walnuts
Preheat the oven to 375 F. Combine flour, baking soda and salt into your mixer. Mix together. Add brown sugar, butter and granulated sugar. Beat together. Mix in eggs, milk and vanilla. Stir in oats, chocolate chips and nuts. Mix well. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto parchment paper lined cookie sheets. Bake for 9-10 minutes for chewy cookies and 12-13 minutes for crispy cookies. Let cool before adding them to baggies to deliver. Makes about 4 dozen.
I put as many cookies as I could fit into a quart Ziplock bag and with a cute ribbon tied the note around the bag. Then enjoyed delivering and chatting with those you take cookies with.
