Salt Painting

salt painting

We have had Netflix for some time now, and we love it. The only thing about it though is my 2 year old watches so much TV now. We have cartoons at her demand. I have decided to try and throw in a after nap activity a few times a week to lower our TV watching. I prepped during nap time, and got all the supplies ready to go. That way as soon as nap time was over it was all ready to go. It also helped to motivate Chloe to take a nap today. I told her all about our salt painting craft, and she was all sorts of excited about it. She went right to sleep. Well of course had to get up and go to the potty at least once in the 2 1/2 hours of nap time. Not bad I say. :)

I love this craft because it can be done with ingredients you have in your kitchen cabinets. It’s cheap and easy for even toddlers.

Supplies

  • Elmer’s School Glue
  • Table Salt
  • Food Coloring
  • Water
  • Paint Brush
  • Bowls or Cups
  • Card Stock

First, have your child draw a picture with the glue onto the card stock. The younger ones will need some help. My Chloe told me exactly what to draw with the glue. I placed the card stock on a piece of newspaper to keep the mess contained.

Next, sprinkle salt all over the picture.  Avoid dumping the salt because it can make your picture look lumpy.  Shake the excess salt off the picture.

2nd step sp

I picked three colors to paint with. I put two drops of blue, green and red in separate bowls. Then added some water to each bowl. This is what we used for our paint.

Now it’s time to paint. Using the paint brush tell your child to only dab the paint onto the salt and glue. They don’t want to smear it on there. If they dab it on the color grows across the salt. Chloe had a blast with it!
